By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister, the lovely—and almost-on-the-shelf— Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth—it’s all an elaborate plan to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.
But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a complete sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her… but somehow Daphne is falling for the dashing duke… for real! And now she must do the impossible and convince the handsome rogue that their clever little scheme deserves a slight alteration, and that nothing makes quite as much sense as falling in love…
My Review:
I decided to pick up the first two books after watching the second series of Bridgerton, and while the first is not quite as good as the show, it was a nice easy read.
There was a surprising amount of humour in the book, which I wasn’t really expecting, but very much enjoyed. I also particularly enjoyed how much Daphne began to stand up for herself. In the second half of the book after being fairly innocent and meek at the start
The relationship between Daphne and Simon is great, but my favourite part was Anthony being an overbearing big brother. Nice character development that I’m sure will be continued into the next books. The only part that I didn’t particularly enjoy was *that* scene towards the end with Daphne and Simon…
Very excited to read The Viscount Who Loved Me as I’ve heard good things and Anthony is my fave! Would also like to see some more development of Whistledown in the next book as she was very much a background character which hardly any interest in her secret identity.
Overall rating - 8/10
