Waking Gods - Review

Synopsis:
As a child, Rose Franklin made an astonishing discovery: a giant metallic hand, buried deep within the earth. As an adult, she’s dedicated her brilliant scientific career to solving the mystery that began that fateful day: Why was a titanic robot of unknown origin buried in pieces around the world? Years of investigation have produced intriguing answers—and even more perplexing questions. But the truth is closer than ever before when a second robot, more massive than the first, materializes and lashes out with deadly force.

Now humankind faces a nightmare invasion scenario made real, as more colossal machines touch down across the globe. But Rose and her team at the Earth Defense Corps refuse to surrender. They can turn the tide if they can unlock the last secrets of an advanced alien technology. The greatest weapon humanity wields is knowledge in a do-or-die battle to inherit the Earth . . . and maybe even the stars.

Review:

This book was quite disappointing for me, unfortunately, especially after I had really enjoyed the first book.

I think the main issue was the plot - even more far fetched than in the first book (which is ok cos its a sci-fi) but really confused and jumbled, with multiple storylines that never really connected well enough. The pacing was also a little weird and all the action seemed to get crammed together and seemed a bit rushed

The characters also weren’t my cup of tea, not very well developed and a lot of the relationships didn’t work or seem forced, especially Eva and Vincent’s. Maybe if a little more time had ben spent developing these characters’ stories this wouldn’t have been an issue

Finally, the writing style really was a struggle to get into, especially for me after having left a decent amount of time from reading the first book. The report and interview style left me feeling like I didn’t know entirely what was going on, which I hated, and meant that most of the action you heard almost second hand

Waking Gods had a really interesting concept, it just wasn’t pulled off particularly well. I don’t think I’ll be reading the last book in the Themis Files Trilogy…
